About the Sexual Assault Center
At the Sexual Assault Center, a team of doctors, nurses, police officers, psychologists, social workers and sex therapists work together to provide specialist care to victims of sexual assault and rape.
Ideally, we like to provide professional help within seven days after the event, as this time frame reduces the chances of medical and psychological issues considerably. The police also have a much better chance of finding the perpetrator if forensic investigations are carried out within a week of the event.

How we work
When you arrive at the Sexual Assault Center, you will be met by a (forensic) nurse, who will stay with you for the duration of your visit. We will make sure that you needn’t repeat your story more than necessary. A team of doctors, nurses, police officers, psychologists, social workers and sex therapists will work together to give you the best care. Everything you discuss with us is treated confidentially.
General
- When you arrive at the Sexual Assault Center, you will be met by a (forensic) nurse. This nurse will stay with you during the examination and explain what will happen. Your visit may take a couple of hours.
- The professionals at the centre will ensure that you needn’t repeat your ordeal more times than is necessary.
The police
- If you are considering reporting the incident to the police, with your permission, a forensic physician will carry out a forensic medical examination and inspect any physical injuries. The examination will take place in the presence of a forensic detective. That way, potential evidence is properly recorded.
- If you then decide to report the incident, the police will arrange an appointment with you at the police station. This will usually be within a couple of days.
- You are also welcome at the Sexual Assault Center even if you do not want the police to be involved.

The doctor
- You will receive medical help in the form of medication to prevent pregnancy and the contraction of sexually transmitted diseases (STD / HIV).
- If you are in pain or are injured, you will be treated by a doctor.
- The doctor or nurse will discuss and agree follow-up medical care with you.
- Your GP will receive a message that you have visited the Sexual Assault Center. If you do not want this to happen, you can tell the nurse on your arrival.
The case manager (your personal support)
- The day after your visit, you will receive a phone call or email from your case manager. This is your personal support person who is an expert in the area of sexual violence. The case manager will explain things and offer advice to help you feel better again.
- Your case manager will also carefully monitor how you are doing and whether your stress responses are decreasing, such as hyperarousal, flashbacks and sleeping problems. If these stress responses do not decrease after four weeks, you can get treatment to help you process the trauma.
